How to calculate the quality of Persian carpet

As a carpet consumer you must be aware of quality calculation of carpets. The quality of hand knotted carpet mostly depends upon the knots per unit area. As the knots count per unit area increases the quality of hand knotted carpet also increases. Mainly two type quality measurement of carpets being used worldwide by carpet sellers and manufacturers.

According to one of older measurement system, quality of hand knotted carpet being represents as the product of number of 20couples of vertical lines in a Yard and number of couples of horizontal knots lines in 9 inches. For example in a 9x54 quality hand knotted Persian carpet. Knots counts will be as under:-

Number of Vertical lines in a yard : 9x20x2=360
Number of horizontal lines in 9 Inches : 2x54=108
Number of horizontal line in a Yard = 108x4=432

So the number of knots per square yard : 360x432=155520 knots per square yard.
Number of knots per square meter : 155520*1.196=186002 knots per square yard

In the second system quality of hand knotted carpets being counted knots per square inch. For if quality is 10x10 than the number of knots should be as under:

Number of knots per square inch= 10x10=100 knots
Number of knots per square yard = 100x1296=129600 knots
Number of knots per square meter = 129600*1.196=155002 knots

You can calculate the quality of hand knotted carpet by counting the knots in one square inch on the back of carpet. If the quality of carpet differs (less than declared) you may ask for quality discount from seller.

Hope the above details are sufficient to calculate the quality of carpets. I will soon publish a java enabled quality calculator using which you can calculate automatically the count of knots every units such as per square inch, per square cm, per square yard and per square meter.
